AFA Dads are cultivating a fellowship among the fathers of the school through a series of social gatherings with and without children over the upcoming school year. The purpose is to help dads stay informed and involved with your child’s education and to strengthen your connection with the school. We hope to build some friendships and to challenge and encourage each other in our roles as dads. We believe the success and strength of the school is directly correlated with our level of involvement.

Please join us at Eggspectations in Chantilly, 8:00 a.m. on Saturday, September 18th.

This first event is being funded by some generous dads, so no money is required. We look forward to meeting you, hearing a short devotion from an AFA Dad, a school update from Dean and discussing future events of interest. Please invite Grandads as well!

You can rsvp through contact information in the Falcon’s Call.

Ad Fontes is celebrating its 15th birthday this year. To begin this special year, a special convocation service was held on August 31, 2010 at Centrerville Presbyterian Church. This was a time to give thanks for God’s faithfulness, to pray for God’s blessing on the year ahead, and to hear a message on “Three Indispensible Things” by national speaker Cortez Cooper.

The K-12 Convocation Ceremony is a new tradition at Ad Fontes. The Convocation is a service of thanksgiving, prayer, worship and dedication of the school year to the Lord. We were blessed to have Dr. Cortez Cooper as our guest speaker.

Dr. Cooper has been a pastor for 50 years and currently shepherds Eagle Heights Presbyterian (PCA) in Winchester. In addition to his pastoral service, he was the first president of Knox Theological Seminary in Ft. Lauderdale, coordinator of Mission to North America, and currently serves as the chairman of the board of Bethany Christian Services. He is a popular speaker and lecturer in congregations and schools around the country, but is known closer to home as the much-loved father-in-law of our lower school principal.

We are very pleased to announce that Coach Jerry Cuffee will take leadership of the Ad Fontes basketball program. Coach Cuffee has fifteen years of head coaching experience and over 200 wins at the high school and select levels and is one of the most respected coaches in Northern Virginia. For the 2008-09 year, Coach Cuffee won the National Christian School Athletic Association Coach of the Year award. He recently led NVCA to the NVIAC conference championship in 2009. As partners with NVCA, many AFA players have already been blessed by his leadership. Beyond his many coaching achievements, his Christ-centered approach and dedication to his players is his greatest achievement. We are excited about this big step in AFA Athletics!

Coach Cuffee shared his thoughts on joining Ad Fontes, “I’m excited about the opportunity to build the Basketball Program at Ad Fontes. I believe we have an opportunity to do something really special here. We have alot of young players and alot of work to do. Expectations will be set high. I’m confident with the commitment of the players, school, and supporters, and the Lord’s blessing we will be successful and build a high caliber program. We will adopt the motto “Play Like A Falcon” which means our teams will have a set of characteristics and core values that stand out — like strong character, fundamental and disciplined play, teamwork, intensity, and toughness. I look forward to becoming a part of the Ad Fontes family.”

For the second year in a row, Ad Fontes Academy won the Virginia State High School Mock Trial Championship on March 21 in Williamsburg, VA. Ad Fontes Academy is the only Northern Virginia team in the history of Virginia High School Mock Trial to win this prestigious legal competition.

“As a young team against experienced competition, it was an honor to win the title last year. The reality that we are back-to-back state champs is still settling in on us. With a year’s experience at nationals, we look forward to competing well against the best schools in the nation,” said faculty coach Jeanette Faulkner.

In only its third year of competition, the team won the final round against Jamestown High School. Sophomore Henry Overos, of Fairfax, won the competition’s Overall Best Attorney Award. The Competition’s Overall Best Witness Award was won for the second year in a row by sophomore Colin Hughes of Springfield.

The team includes juniors Francesca Mertan of Aldie and Stephanie Lockhart of Purcellville, as well as sophomores Gregory Barton and Addison Smith of Purcellville, Patricia Chenette of Clifton, Danielle Decker of Sterling, Joanna Faulkner of Vienna, Doug Schultz of Potomac, MD and Zachary Solomon. Francesca Mertan won a Best Team Witness award and Stephanie Lockhart won a Best Team Attorney Award.

According to team Attorney Coach, Kerry Lockhart, “As a classical Christian school, our training in formal logic and classical rhetoric is a tangible plus for our students.” The Virginia State Champions will compete in the National Mock Trial Competition May 6-9 in Philadelphia.

Faculty coaches included Jeanette Faulkner, Kerry Lockhart, and Cheryl Hughes.

This competition is the premier national law-related academic tournament for high school students, encouraging students to explore constitutional concepts, courtroom protocol and basic litigation skills. Every team in the state is presented with the same case, which is adapted from an actual court case. Each team must be prepared to argue as either the prosecution or defense, using the Federal Rules of Evidence, correct courtroom protocol and present opening and closing arguments to a jury of professional attorneys and judges in actual courtrooms.
